Chapter 12

Cressy addressed the panel in front of her. “You called this meeting, and I didn’t even get a chance to prepare for it? That’s interesting.”

At that, one of the men looked at her and gave her a benevolent smile. “What’s to prepare for?” he asked. “Apparently you’re back in good health and good spirits. Although a few of us suggested that maybe you needed a psych eval done.”

She gave him a slow smile of the sort that made him sink back against his chair, almost quivering in place. “I would be interested to know who made that suggestion. And, just for the record, if a psych eval was a requirement, it would have to include all staff and board members of course. In that case, I would be happy to line up for mine.”

He pulled himself together, straightened his tie and shoulders, and glared at her. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Anything short of such an equitable standard would be considered intimidation,” she murmured. “Members of the Board, let me be clear. If you didn’t want me to come back, that’s all you had to say. I would have been perfectly capable of making a decision at that point, fair and square. Yet, at the moment, it sounds to me as if you’re just afraid I’m coming back.”

The spokesman sniffed. A hard, irritating sound that made her laugh.

“It sure sounds that way, doesn’t it?” she proposed, looking from one to the other. “That makes me very intrigued as to what it is that you’re hiding.”

One of the other men looked at her in alarm. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. We’re not trying to hide anything.”

“Since I’ve been gone,” she began, “you’ve cut the cleaning staff. You’ve cut the orderlies. You’ve decimated the food bill and terminated the chef that was doing a great job. I haven’t even begun to document the true impacts and costs of those changes yet, not to mention the others. I’ve had nothing but complaints from patients and families that I brought into this place. In fairness, some of that is due to the fact that I wasn’t here, but it is the decline in patient care and service standards that has really pissed them off.”

At that, the members looked at each other uneasily.

Cressy gave them the same benevolent smile she had given their spokesman before. “So, now I guess there are a few decisions to be made.”

“What do you mean?” Dr. Mendelsohn asked in alarm at her side. “We are all very delighted to have you back.”

“No, you’re not,” she argued, shaking her head. “You can’t even begin to convince me of that now.” She waved a hand at the four board members here. “And just how many shares do you all collectively own in this place?”

At that, they all stiffened and glared at her.

She nodded, looking at Mendelsohn and the others, all sitting, staring. “So, together I would presume you account for 51 percent at least—the four of you anyway—and, therefore, all these changes have been made exactly as you wanted, despite the consequences.
